How many days do you need in Panama City? — Most people ask this question expecting a single number. The honest answer is: it depends on what kind of traveler you are. But there is a minimum. You can do Panama City justice in 2 full days if you're focused. With 3 to 4 days, you can breathe, explore, and add a day trip. Anything less than 2 days and you're skimming the surface of a city that genuinely rewards more time.

Panama City surprises first-time visitors. Most arrive thinking it's a brief transit stop between other destinations — a canal, some old buildings, done. That assumption costs them.

In reality, the city packs an extraordinary range into a compact area: a UNESCO World Heritage historic district (Casco Viejo), one of the world's great engineering marvels (the Panama Canal), a dense tropical rainforest with sloths and monkeys within city limits (Metropolitan Natural Park and Gamboa), indigenous communities accessible as day trips, and a modern skyline with some of the best restaurants in Central America.

That's not a one-day city. It's barely a three-day city if you want to do it properly. Here's how each scenario actually plays out.

A layover in Panama City is genuinely worth using — Tocumen Airport is only 25 minutes from Casco Viejo by Uber. With 4 to 8 hours between flights, you can see one thing well or two things quickly.

With 4 hours: Go straight to Casco Viejo. Walk the main plazas, grab a coffee, see the waterfront. Don't try to add the Canal — you won't make it back in time comfortably.

With 6–8 hours: You can combine a quick stop at the Miraflores Locks (Panama Canal) with time in Casco Viejo. Allow 90 minutes at the Canal, 2 hours in Casco Viejo, and buffer time for Uber between locations and back to the airport.

Day 1 — The historic city

Start with a morning walking tour of Casco Viejo — this is the beating heart of Panama City and deserves 3 to 4 hours. Explore the plazas, the waterfront, the colonial churches, and the hidden alleys. Stay in the neighborhood for lunch. In the afternoon, wander freely or visit the Panama Canal Museum inside the district.

Day 2 — The Canal

Head to the Miraflores Locks Visitor Center in the morning — aim to arrive between 9 and 10am to maximize your chances of seeing large ships transit. Allow 2 to 2.5 hours. In the afternoon, drive along the Cinta Costera waterfront or visit the Amador Causeway for skyline views and a relaxed end to the trip.

Honest assessment: 2 days is enough to leave with a real sense of the city. You won't feel like you've rushed if you stay focused. You will wish you had more time when you're back home.

Days 1–2 — City foundations

Follow the 2-day itinerary above. Casco Viejo on day one, Canal and causeway on day two. You'll have enough time to go slowly, eat well, and actually absorb the city rather than sprint through it.

Day 3 — Jungle and wildlife

Panama City is one of the only capitals in the world with tropical jungle inside its limits. Use day 3 for a guided wildlife experience — the Monkey Island and Gatun Lake tour is a full-day adventure with boat rides and wildlife sightings. Alternatively, the Gamboa Sloth Sanctuary is excellent for families. Both are 45 minutes from the city.

Day 4 — A second slower day in the city

Use the last day to revisit what you liked, explore Panama Viejo (the ruins of the original 1519 city), or simply enjoy Casco Viejo at a café pace — morning coffee, rooftop lunch, sunset cocktail. This is what most travelers say they wished they'd done more of.

With five or more days, Panama City becomes a base rather than a destination — and that's when it gets really interesting. The day trips accessible from the city are genuinely world-class.
